This morning we’re listening to The Acid Flashback, an internet wireless station who on the whole, do play an astoundingly good selection of music.
After playing; Something’s Happening by Peter Frampton, Miss You In A Heartbeat by Def Leppard and Is There Any Love In Your Heart by Lenny Kravitz, they played 2112 by Rush, the whole of side A of the album 2112, which is the 2112 suite if you will.
I bought that album in 1977, when it was still relatively new and as much as I’d already fallen under the spell of Messrs Lifeson, Lee and Peart (and let’s not forget Rustey), I felt, at the time and for some years afterwards that the piece 2112 was just a bit hackneyed and formulaic, a parody of itself almost.
However, as the years have passed, I’ve grown to appreciate it more; appreciation or conditioning? Moot point? The Acid Flashback then followed up with; T.N.T. by AC/DC, I’m Down by Schon & Hammer and I Pity Inanimate Objects by Godley & Creme, that last one was a bit weird.
But, as soon as I heard 2112’s opening electronica, I turned up the volume on the Hi-Fi, wondering as I did if they would play just the opening section or the whole thing. Happily, they played the whole thing and I sat there with a semi smile on my face mouthing along to the lyrics, I won’t say singing along because there’s no way I could hit the notes that Geddy Lee was hitting back in 1976 but I mouthed the lyrics, I air drummed, I bloody well enjoyed it.
Attention all planets of the Solar Federation.
We have assumed control.
We have assumed control.
We have assumed control.
I only know something is happening. And now I can’t get it out of my head. Grrr
